3 online magazines.

November 18, 2008 at 9:09 pm (Uncategorized)

The first online zine I stumbled across I think I like the best: streetgraphic.com

I like it so much because it’s straight foward and in your face. I didn’t have to search through the web site to find the latest information or articles in and about the zine. It’s interactive with fan base as well; straight away I noticed an offer for an internship which is something I am very interested in right now.

2. Second web site is great because it is business orientated. As graphic designers, I think we get wrapped up in the new and cool and what our art looks like, especially now in our lives while we are still studying design and really want to build our style. What we forget to think about is what’s going on in the business world of graphic design:

*graphicdefine.org is AWESOME as far as getting into the minds of the professionals. There are excerpts from world known graphic designers who publish books about the minds of designers and the business of graphic design. There are articles on how to deal with clients, how to understand what you are trying to sell as a designer, and other pointers that really have nothing to do with graphic design, like articles about the environment, i.e.”how to keep your office green”

3. The third website it’s sort of cool and interesting, I didn’t like how I could only view the zine as a pdf. and the school’s computers wouldn’t let me load the zines but the point behind the website is really popular right now. The website is: http://revolutionart.publicistas.org/

“The objective of REVOLUTIONART is the one to serve as a inspirational source to artists, models, designers, advertisers, photographers, designers and communicators in general who wish to explore new alternatives of expression through graphical samples of design, photo, ads, fashion, music, and general visual arts. We’re coolhunters.”- revolutionart.org

Graphic Design Portfolios.

November 25, 2008 at 10:37 pm (Uncategorized)

Next quarter is going to be a tuff one; I am taking a lot of interesting but very hard classes that I’m trying to get myself psyched for. Two of the four classes that are already putting my nervous on edge are motion graphics and packaging! So, needless to say, I was extremely happy to find some videos that are done using type treatments. A friend of mine showed me some REALLY awesome motion graphic type treatment videos, with its focus being quotes from movies like “Pulp-fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs”. Motion Graphics is graphic design eh?

It’s a little crazy, but if you like the movie then you’ll like this.

Here’s another cool kinetic typography video:

and another:

I found this video about future trends in logo design that might be useful:

I really wanted to find something in packaging but I couldn’t find a lot of impressive stuff. Take what you can with this!

Web Design Resources

November 5, 2008 at 3:32 am (Uncategorized)

I am completely new to this “finding new web design resources” but I have to say, I am very interested in this. I cannot stand solid color sometimes and with enough research (thanks gooogle..yet again), I have been able to find a few reliable sources that have some fancy shmancy designs.

#1. pageresource.com..

I’m still a little confused about this site, only because when I tried to pull up the photos of the “background design” the picture didn’t expand, like it wasn’t properly sized, meaning that the guy who made the site is probably an amateur, and at our fragile state we don’t need to be tossed in the hands of one of those. But I can’t help but advise this site because, from what I saw, there were tons of really beautiful graphics, and links to other graphic sources.

#2. dinpattern.com

I really like this site and will probably be visiting it in the near future for this up coming project and for future use. It’s really well made and has a lot of beautiful background graphics to chose from. That’s all I can really say about that, except for go check it out.

I have discovered a website that gives me full use of the virtual graphic design world and illustration world. It really isn’t fair, every time I go to this site I feel like I’m cheating, but in a sense, it’s just like going to the school library and checking out all the really neat Illustration books up there. I can’t tell ya how many new artists I have found out about because of the library. Anywho, I might as well share the wealth: check this out: www.cpluv.com. I promise you will become obsessed.

Now, my taste changes monthly, but a few artists have caught my eye recently:

#1. Liz Lomax: lizlomax.com

Wheeew this girl is good. she defines a true 3D illustrator, actually she is one of the firsts. First she draws up a sketch of the artist. Then she molds some wire and covers the wire with skulpty..after that she paints the model then takes pictures to play with in photoshop. You might have seen some of her work, she does work for rock stars and for high up magazines. She is most def. my roll model.

#2. Alex Turvey: AlexTurvey.com

I came across this guy randomly and I have to say he is interesting. I always thought my drawings were kind of creepy and unique but fun. I really haven’t seen anyone with the same sort of flare, but this guy nails it. I love his sculptures or found object collages. He does work for bright eyes and for companies like “ford”. He is just well rounded and he doesn’t have to change his sick style for anyone. That’s what makes him so profound to me.

Well, there you have it: 3 websites for your liking:

What is web 2.0 and what is important about it to your design career?

October 28, 2008 at 9:45 pm (Uncategorized)

“Web 2.0, through its numerous definitions, encapsulates the idea of the proliferation of interconnectivity and interactivity of web-delivered content. Tim O’Reilly regards Web 2.0 as business embracing the web as a platform and using its strengths, for example global audiences”-wikipedia.org

It’s Important as graphic designers, media designers, animators, any business that’s relevant to the daily use of the internet, computer, computer software to CONSTANTLY KEEP UPDATED, or it’s just pointless to be in that field. To be a lagger is just suicide and unemployment, especially in graphic design. Web 2.0 (as pointed out in the chart below *) WILL proceed onto a greater and freer form of internet and we (students, teachers, designers) should be hot on its tracks, or at least try to be. I have to admit, it’s hard to keep up with adobe, can you believe CS4 is already out? I feel like I finally bought C3?!

* to break it down into a more visual approach (for all of us visual learners) I found a formulation of web 2.0 (compared to web 1.0) off of http://www.oreillynet.com (keep in mind, this is only a few differences) enjoy.

Web 1.0   Web 2.0
DoubleClick –> Google AdSense
Ofoto –> Flickr
Akamai –> BitTorrent
mp3.com –> Napster
Britannica Online –> Wikipedia
personal websites –> blogging
evite –> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation –> search engine optimization
page views –> cost per click
screen scraping –> web services
publishing –> participation
content management systems –> wikis
directories (taxonomy) –> tagging (“folksonomy”)
stickiness –> syndicatio

Why is web design important to my design career?

October 8, 2008 at 2:30 am (Uncategorized)

As a striving graphic designer, I find that the whole process of design is based around more than just making things look and express a business or idea. The ability to not only take those ideas and essences and build them into something amazing, but to incorporate them into something interactive and in focus with the new age world of technology is what makes the job as a graphic designer more challenging and more rewarding. I think that using web design to broaden my expertise and my mind will always keep me in touch with the ever changing world of design and technology as well as constantly challenge me to new ideas to make my customers and myself happy and excited about the companies abilities and future.
